37th People's Chess Tournament In Long Weekend

Last weekend I was quite busy with the 37th People's Chess Tournament in Fremont Marriott. As it was a long weekend, I registered it online through www.bayareachess.com after renewing my US Chess Membership. After a successful World Cup Cricket 2011 opening ceremony in Dhaka where Bryan Adams, Shankar-Ehsan-Loy, Runa Laila, Sabina Yasmin et al perfomred in the midst of mind blowing fireworks, we gathered in Shahriar's house for the India vs Bangladesh opening match of the world cup in 19th February. He arranged lots of people and we had a nice time gossiping together (Ezaz, Amin, Dhanad, Sayeem, Wali Bhai, Sumit Bhai, Mamun Bhai, Dipu Bhai and some others). Although we lost due to a huge score from Sehwag (175) that took India's total to 370/4 in 50 overs, we gave it a fight by scoring 283/9 without being all out. That meant I didn't get much sleep for the next morning's chess game in the tournament at 11:30 AM.  I won the first game nicely, drew a lost game agai...

Bangladesh Defeated West Indies In The First Test Cricket Match In Kingstown

Bangladesh has defeated West Indies by 95 runs in the first test match of the 2 test series in their Caribbean tour. This is Bangladesh's second test match win in almost 10 years of its test cricket history. It's true that most of the regular West Indies players didn't play this game due to their financial issues with the West Indies cricket board. But even then the team that played has played well enough to generate a very interesting and competitive Test cricket match. I have followed most of the 4th and 5th day plays of the match and I can say definitely that it was a very competitive match with the win swinging over West Indies and Bangladesh side alternately everyday. Tamim Iqbal (128) was declared Man of the Match due to the only century in all the 4 innings in this match. For Bengali readers, see Tamim's match winning knock being compared with his brother Nafees Iqbal and Uncle Akram Khan's innings in a newspaper article at http://www.ittefaq.com/content/20...

NABC 2009 San Jose During Independence Day Weekend

From Blogs Long weekend of American Independence day was a good time for us recovering from the recent shock and having a great time with Bengali touch all around us. July 2nd, 3rd, 4th NABC 2009 (stands for North American Bengali Conference ) was successfully held in San Jose McEnry Convention Center . I, Shusmita, Ahyan, Nitol and Amin attended it all the 3 days. Thousands of Bengali speaking people came from all accross USA and Canada. While most of the crowd seemed to be from West Bengal, there were a decent amount of visitors, artists from Bangladesh as well. Highlights of this conference for me were chat with Humayun Ahmed , the stage performance of Runa Laila and getting to know the Bangladeshi Comedian Naveed Mahbub . The first night (Thursday) we had a little tough time to find a dinner place before attending Lopa Mudra, Srikanta and Anjan Dutta 's music. The second morning I came with Nitol and Amin in the morning to listen to the opening speech of Humayun Ahmed before...

Good day for Bangladesh Cricket

The first day (yesterday) of first test Bangladesh tour of South Africa, despite Bangladesh getting all out for 192 runs, Bangladesh managed to rip off top 4 South African batsmen only for 76 runs. Good fightback from us. At this stage, we want fighting cricket whether it ends up in win or loss, we want good cricket for long term improvement of Bangladesh cricket team. Meanwhile in U-19 world cup Bangladesh defeated England in n exciting low scoring match to go into the quarter finals undefeated as the only other team than Pakistan. Incidentally, the Quarter-Final will be held between Bangladesh Under-19 v South Africa Under-19 at Kuala Lumpur - Feb 24, 2008.

Nominate the New 7 Wonders of Nature (Cox' s Bazar and Sunderban)

Last week (07.07.07) the list of New 7 wonders of the world has been declared. Many of us voted his/her choices in the website. Many of us were enthusiastic about the matter, as we all have been listening about the Great 7 wonders of the world since our childhood. Although the ancient and middle-age 7 wonders were nominated by research from UNESCO, modern 7 wonders of the world was based on 100 million votes over internet from all around the world and hence is not part of official research or declaration from UNESCO. Still this is the only declaration of 7 modern wonders of the world. i am particularly thrilled to see Taj Mahal and Great Wall of China in this new list, representing their great economic progression in this flat world. The New 7 wonder foundation has started another campaign, named New 7 wonders of Nature . You can nominate your own choice there. Can't we all try to nominate something from our own this time? May be we don't have something like Pyramid or T...
